MLB rumors: 5 dark horse trade destinations for Blake Snell
4. Cincinnati Reds
Trevor Bauer seems open to anything in free agency, including a return to a comfortable structure with the Reds. But when it comes down to it, Cincinnati may simply not be able to compete financially if Bauer winds up getting offers in the 4 or 5-year range.
The rotation looks like it’ll be a strength for Cincinnati in 2021 with or without the reigning NL Cy Young Award winner, as Luis Castillo, Sonny Gray (assuming he’s not traded) will lead the way. Wade Miley, Anthony DeSclafani (a free agent himself) and Tyler Mahle would be fine to fill out the starting slots.
That said, the NL Central is wide open. The Chicago Cubs are heading into an offseason of upheaval. Though a big move (Francisco Lindor, Nolan Arenado) shouldn’t be ruled out, the St. Louis Cardinals may be a bit restricted in what they can do. The Milwaukee Brewers seem more inclined to offload notable pieces (Josh Hader?) than add anyone of note.
The Reds returned to the playoffs last year, and they have a case to make a big move or two this offseason to make a push to a division title in 2021. A 1-2-3, right-lefty-righty set of Castillo, Snell and Gray at the top of the rotation would be formidable, and Snell’s ground ball-heavy ways should play well at hitter-friendly Great American Ballpark.
