2. San Francisco Giants

I owe a huge hat-tip to Marc Delucchi over at Around The Foghorn for this one. The Giants seem to be willing to add payroll this offseason, while most other teams want to stand pat or reduce when it’s all said and done. Kevin Gausman is coming back but Drew Smyly is gone, so they are in the market for starting pitching. If Opening Day were tomorrow, manager Gabe Kapler would be giving Gausman or Johnny Cueto the nod. That’s not necessarily a bad position, but the No. 1 spot in the rotation seems ripe for an upgrade.

The Giants progressed to near .500 (29-31) in 2020. Making a bigger push up the NL West standings will be a daunting task, with the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres not going anywhere. But team president Farhan Zaidi seems open to all possibilities, so the idea of a fairly significant move shouldn’t be dismissed. A rising farm system and some controllable major league talent provide assets for trades.
