3 teams that should save Matthew Stafford from Lions nightmare this offseason
By Mike Luciano
As impressive as 2019 second-rounder Drew Lock looked during his rookie season and as mouth-watering as his arm talent is, the Broncos have to make some tough decisions about their viability in a division that features Derek Carr, Justin Herbert, and Patrick Mahomes with Lock under center. In what was supposed to be a breakout season with new OC Pat Shurmur and a bevy of new receivers, Lock has completed just 56 percent of his passes with just seven touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
Vic Fangio might be running out of patience for Lock, and that could motivate John Elway to pursue a trade for Stafford.
Shurmur has proven that as a coordinator, he can do an excellent job at getting production out of quarterbacks. Stafford could be headed for another late-career resurgence given Shurmur’s offensive mind and young receivers like Jerry Jeudy and Courtland Sutton on the perimeter. The Broncos might be relegated to the bottom of this division for a decade if they don’t figure out their quarterback situation, and Stafford would certainly be a more productive choice in the immediate future than Lock if Denver wants to absorb his contract.
