Heisman watch: Mac Jones closing on Kyle Trask but Trevor Lawrence lurks
Heisman watch candidate No. 2: Mac Jones, QB, Alabama
After his worst game of the season, it does appear that Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Mac Jones might’ve been on cruise control against Kentucky as he looked forward to this week’s Iron Bowl. Because in the rivalry matchup against Auburn, Jones was lights-out. His efforts under center not only pushed his team to a 42-13 win but vaulted him back in real contention to win the Heisman Trophy.
On the day against Auburn, Jones completed 18-of-26 passes for 302 yards and five touchdowns on the day, completely dicing up the Tigers defense at every turn. For the year now, Jones has put up 2,728 yards with 23 touchdowns and only three interceptions along with a single rushing score. Putting up those numbers for the best team in college football undeniably puts the quarterback in the mix to win this award.
Heisman watch candidate No. 1: Kyle Trask, QB, Florida
Do you think that Florida quarterback Kyle Trask missed having all-world tight end Kyle Pitts in the lineup? After the pass-catcher had missed a couple of games with an injury, he returned on Saturday in the matchup with Kentucky and Trask looked his way often, connecting for three touchdown passes. And in doing so, Trask did absolutely nothing to lose his spot as the Heisman frontrunner amid the 34-10 win for the Gators.
Trask had a ho-hum day for him on Saturday as he completed 21-of-27 passes for 256 yards and three scores (all to Pitts). Now the quarterback has 34 touchdown passes and only three interceptions in just eight games to go along with 2,810 yards. At this pace, the Gators quarterback isn’t going to be stopped in winning the award. In the simplest terms, he’ll have to do something to lose his grip on the No. 1 spot.
