5 replacements for Doug Pederson as Eagles head coach
By Mike Luciano
Despite serving as Drew Brees’ quality control coach, quarterbacks coach, and offensive coordinator for the last 19 seasons in both San Diego and New Orleans, Carmichael’s name has rarely come up in head coach discussions, largely due to the assumption that Sean Payton is doing everything on offense for New Orleans. However, there’s no question that Carmichael has a hand in designing New Orleans’ ultra-efficient offense.
Carmichael has helped Brees go from a promising, efficient youngster to a passing yards record-breaker in the middle part of his career to a completion percentage record-breaker in his twilight. That ability to evolve proves he’s the best man for the job of fixing Wentz and, thereby, the Eagles.
One of the marks against Pederson in Philadelphia was the fact he didn’t call plays. Carmichael also hasn’t called plays for the majority of his Saints career. However, for all of his faults, Pederson did beat Bill Belichick and Tom Brady in a Super Bowl with Nick Foles, and he did so on the back of an expertly crafted game plan. Carmichael is one of the biggest reasons for Brees’ success and ability to return to prominence after several setbacks, and that could help Wentz get back to his 2017 form while making the Eagles contenders for the next few seasons.
