NFL MVP stock watch: Derrick Henry is back
By Dustin Baker
4. Russell Wilson, QB (Seattle Seahawks)
Last Week’s Ranking: 4th
Highest Ranking of Season: 1st (-3)
2020 Stats: 3,215 Passing Yards, 31 Passing TDs, 10 INTs, 70.7% Comp, 110.8 Passer Rating
A sad situation has beset Russell Wilson in recent weeks, and it’s extremely unlikely that he cares about it. Less than a month ago, Wilson ranked No. 2 all-time on the NFL’s passer rating leaderboard. Suddenly, Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson reached the 1,500-pass-attempt criteria to qualify for the NFL’s historic leaderboard. And just like that — Wilson dropped from No. 2 to No. 4 all-time behind (in order) Mahomes, Watson, and Aaron Rodgers. But we digress.
Wilson was decent on Monday Night Football — the Eagles were not. Wilson’s single touchdown pass was enough to subdue a Philadelphia team that is in visible disarray. The performance from Wilson was efficient as he tallied a 102.1 passer rating, but that was predominantly driven up by passing accuracy. This was just the second game all season that Wilson threw less than two touchdown passes.
His performance since Week 9 has tumbled, and his MVP stock has followed. He remains the second-best quarterback in the NFL for reputation’s sake, but he will not hoist the MVP award trophy in 2020. In fairness, we did predict that he would win the award for several weeks. Nonetheless, the accolade is probably heading toward a man that wears red clothing on Sundays.
