AA. player. 128. Scouting Report. 1B. Gavin Sheets. 2. Pick Analysis

If there had been a minor league season in 2020, Sheets might have pushed hard to make his big league debut. After hitting .293 with 28 doubles in High-A ball in 2018 (119 games-497 plate appearances), his first full minor league season. Then he hit 16 home runs with 83 RBI for Double-A Birmingham in 2019, with a .478 slugging percentage in the second half of that season. He’s a high-contact hitter who draws walks, so adding legit power to that mix is an enticing prospect.

Sheets is projected as a first baseman, though he did play some right field in the Cape Cod League between his final two college seasons at Wake Forest. If he can’t move off first base to a corner outfield spot, and the scouting reports to this point suggests it’s unlikely, he seems set to become superfluous to the White Sox.

The White Sox experimented with top prospect Andrew Vaughn at third base during 2020 summer camp. But make no mistake, the future for the third overall pick in the 2019 draft is lined up to be at first base. With a .237 average against left-handers in 2019, Sheets might be a future platoon candidate. There’s an argument to sell-high here.
