2. Cincinnati Reds

The Reds are another team looking to make a big splash this offseason. The team has already been linked to Francisco Lindor in rumors, so it is natural to throw them into the Story conversation.

Cincinnati had Freddy Galvis play shortstop in over half the games last season and now he is a free agent. The team being connected to Lindor means there is a real hope here to land a star and bounce back after making the postseason in 2020 and being shutout in both games.

The Reds have been seeking a new franchise shortstop since Barry Larkin’s final season in 2004 and have cycled through a list of players since then. But no one has stuck and acquiring Story as a long-term piece would finally change that.

Story’s resume is tough to beat. He is a career 20.7-WAR player in five seasons and has finished top-12 in NL MVP voting each of the past three seasons.

The Reds should continue their chase for Lindor. If that falls through, going all-in on Story should still be possible if other teams are also waiting to see what happens with the Cleveland Indians shortstop this offseason.
