The NBA may not be testing for marijuana this year, which is why J.R. Smith started trending.

Some NBA players just have a certain reputation because of their larger-than-life, fun-loving personalities. J.R. Smith is definitely one of them.

Despite playing a minimal role in the Los Angeles Lakers‘ title run this season, Smith has long been a beloved NBA figure. From being one of LeBron James’ recurring teammates to not wearing a shirt during the Cleveland Cavaliers‘ championship parade to his classic, meme-able mistake in the 2018 NBA Finals to a bevy of other unforgettable moments, Smith is a humorous icon in professional basketball. His love and advocacy for weed is perhaps one of the biggest reasons why.

So when it was reported on Thursday by NBA writer Ben Dowsett that the league will not be testing for marijuana during the upcoming season, J.R. Smith immediately started trending on Twitter. It wasn’t hard to put two and two together to figure out why.

The reason J.R. Smith started trending is hilarious

NBA Twitter, as expected, took this report and absolutely ran with it:

The Photoshops didn’t take long to follow:

Of course, fellow Laker Dion Waiters had to be included in the celebrations too:

Smith isn’t even signed to an NBA contract right now, but if he is, this might not be too far off:

And whenever J.R. Smith is involved, you just know LeBron is going to be brought into it somehow:

King James wasn’t the only NBA legend brought into it, though:

Whether he re-signs with the Lakers or joins another team in free agency remains to be seen, but no matter where he ends up, this rule change immediately leading to J.R. Smith trending tells us he’s going to be happy no matter what.
