College football upset alert No. 2: Texas A&M Aggies
Rank: 5 | Opponent: at Auburn Tigers | Time: Saturday, Dec. 5, Noon ET
Of the five teams I’m putting on upset alert in Week 14 of the college football season, none of them were as conflicting at the Texas A&M Aggies. On one hand, Jimbo Fisher’s team has done nothing but win — including a huge victory over Florida — since they were run off the field against Alabama. But on the other hand, what the Aggies showed last week against LSU was a bit concerning.
Not only were the rival Tigers limping into last week’s game after what’s been a rough season for the defending champs and still didn’t get run off the field but Texas A&M looked downright bad. That was especially true for quarterback Kellen Mond and the offense, a unit that was seemingly shedding their label of being unreliable prior to the win over LSU last week.
Texas A&M was undoubtedly bailed out by the best defensive performance the Aggies have put together this season. But as they now must go on the road to face Auburn, a team that, if nothing else, has highly rated talent and athletes on both sides of the ball, there has to be some worry about Texas A&M.
The reason this was a conflicting choice is because, frankly, Auburn often hasn’t looked as good as their 5-3 record would suggest. But Gus Malzahn is infamous for having this exact type of unimpressive team by the program’s standards and still picking up a win over a highly-ranked team like A&M. With this matchup at home for the Tigers, it feels safe to say situationally that the Aggies are in danger.
