The Jets defense hit a new low on Sunday. It’s clear the players believe defensive coordinator Gregg Williams is a problem.

A complete coverage breakdown in the Jets secondary caused the team to drop a heartbreaker to the Raiders on Sunday. Marcus Maye is one player who isn’t willing to take the blame for what he believes to be a coaching mistake.

In the aftermath of the deflating loss, Maye told reporters that his defense “could have been in a better call” for the play that ultimately propelled the Raiders to victory. Presumably, the Jets secondary could have played things more conservatively to prevent Las Vegas from torching them over the top. Instead, Williams called a more aggressive coverage than the situation required.

The loss might help New York keep hold of the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft, but that’s not a comforting consolation prize for players grinding in practice on a weekly basis. Maye is one player who is still widely regarded as an above-average player by NFL executives. In a very real sense, he and his teammates might be losing future earnings due to New York’s poor season.

The stench of potentially finishing 0-16 would almost certainly ring in a complete regime change in New York. Adam Gase is lucky he still has his job as the team’s head coach. Williams is arguably even more culpable for the team’s failures due to his schematic failures on the defensive side of the ball. His stock may be at an all-time low around the NFL due to his struggles in 2020.

There’s still time for the Jets to salvage a more respectable regular season, but the team only has five more chances to avoid enduring a winless campaign. The obvious reality that the players already have lost trust in their coaching staff will make that task much more difficult.
