2. Minnesota Twins

When Wheeler hit free agency last offseason, the Twins were rightfully rumored to be in on him. There was a good case for them to do whatever it took to get him signed, but of course they fell short when the Phillies made their offer.

Even what looks likely to be the loss of Jake Odorizzi in free agency, the Twins look to have a good 1-2-3 to lead their starting rotation next year (Kenta Maeda, Jose Berrios, Michael Pineda). Increasing payroll is not happening this offseason, but the offloading of outfielder Eddie Rosario before the non-tender deadline was helpful to create some space. The bullpen has taken a notable hit this offseason already, as Trevor May signed with the New York Mets.

The Twins’ time to win still seems to be now, despite an epic postseason losing streak, and the front office has generally not been afraid to make bold moves (signing Josh Donaldson and trading for Maeda last offseason). Further fortifying the starting rotation could be on the radar. As much as Minnesota could be a downspout dark horse to trade for Blake Snell, a pivot to Wheeler could be in the cards now.
