1. George Springer

Springer remains the obvious top target when it comes to position players. He is atop the free agent class and the Mets stand out as a team with the need for him and also the available money to pay him.

Landing a duo of Realmuto and Bauer may have ended the pursuit of Springer. But signing McCann as the catcher should signal the Mets have not lost their interest in the outfielder.

Springer is a three-time All-Star, a former World Series MVP, and has a 27.3 WAR in seven career seasons. Anyone on the 2017 Houston Astros squad is going to face criticism and stats may be put into question. Springer was still playing great before 2017 and his numbers also didn’t drastically dip after.

Signing Springer would be on the same level as acquiring Francisco Lindor in a trade. The Mets would land a true star of the game and money would be allocated toward players actually helping the team. The bad taste of Jed Lowrie and Yoenis Cespedes deals could be wiped away with the clean slate in 2021.

Fans have their sights set on the likes of Bauer and Springer. The front office just needs to convince both players that there is a real foundation in place and Cohen isn’t just all talk.
