2020 hindsight: 5 coaches Texas could have hired instead of Tom Herman
By John Buhler
Texas would have prevented Texas A&M from getting Jimbo Fisher
Jimbo Fisher is the reason the former Florida State Seminoles head coach has the Aggies still in the mix to make the College Football Playoff. Not only does he have the Aggies as the second-best team in the SEC in only year three on the job, but he coaches the best team in Texas.
Back in 2016, Fisher was only three years removed from winning a national title at Florida State. When he took over for the iconic Bobby Bowden in 2010, Florida State won three ACC Championships and four ACC Atlantic division titles. Florida State won at least 10 games in six of his eight seasons as the main man in Tallahassee. 2016 was Florida State’s last great season.
Fisher left the program shortly before the end of the 2017 campaign to take over in College Station. After a 9-4 2018 season and an 8-5 2019 year, Texas A&M went 7-1 in its first eight games of 2020. Fisher will be coaching in his fourth New Year’s Six bowl this holiday season since the dawn of the College Football Playoff. His success at Texas A&M must make Texas furious.
This is not to say Fisher was ripe for the picking at the end of the 2016 season like Herman was, but he was more out the door in Tallahassee than we realized. Because Texas A&M boosters were willing to fork up some massive dough to get Fisher, Gig Em Nation is reaping the benefits of having a top-tier coach leading their program. Texas sure wishes they had one.
Which coaching candidates should Texas have hired over Herman in hindsight?
