The Jaguars seem poised to draft Justin Fields if they want to in the 2021 NFL Draft. So why add Newton?

Throwing Fields, or any other top rookie quarterback, on the field right away is not always the best strategy. Just look what ended up happening to Joe Burrow in Cincinnati.

Newton can fill a role similar to Ryan Fitzpatrick’s in Miami. He can open the season as the starting quarterback. If he is awful, the rookie can get more time to develop and start after a few games. But if he does well, he revives his career and the rookie still gets time to learn.

The Jaguars are not exactly expected to be Super Bowl contenders in 2021 so Newton would show up with zero pressure. DJ Chark and rookie Laviska Shenault are nice pieces at receiver and Jacksonville can add to that unit through the draft and free agency.

Going to Jacksonville would be a total 180 from New England. Newton could be loose again and show up somewhere without any expectations. 2020 was all about proving he was healthy enough to play. 2021 could be his comeback year and, who knows, maybe he does have a Fitzmagic-esque run in Florida to make the Jaguars a competitive team.
