Heisman watch candidate No. 4: Justin Fields, QB, Ohio State

With the shortened season for the Ohio State Buckeyes (and the Big Ten at large), it would’ve been great to see quarterback Justin Fields get to face off against his team’s biggest rival. Unfortunately, The Game against Michigan was canceled this season and we have to wait until next week to see Fields once again as he takes the field for the Big Ten Championship Game.

Fields’ numbers in just five games, though imperfect, have been quite impressive. He’s completed 78.1 percent of his throws for 1,407 yards, 15 touchdowns and just three picks while also rushing for 239 yards and five more scores. Unfortunately, it’s impossible to put him higher than No. 4 in the Heisman race simply because he doesn’t have the body of work that the rest of the top candidates do.

Heisman watch candidate No. 3: DeVonta Smith, WR, Alabama

In truth, the Alabama passing offense wasn’t needed on Saturday in a dominant win over Arkansas, so DeVonta Smith’s numbers in that regard weren’t particularly impressive. After topping 200 yards with three touchdowns just last week, Smith managed only three receptions for 22 yards against the Razorbacks. Of course, the Crimson Tide superstar wasn’t totally quiet as he took an 84-yard pun return to the house.

Smith has 83 catches for 1,327 yards and 15 touchdowns on the year as a wide receiver and now has a monster special teams touchdown to his credit as well. I said last week that he’s the best player in college football and it stands true. In fact, I’ll call myself a coward for not having him ahead of the two quarterbacks at the top of these rankings.
