After a load of legal hassles and more than a year out of the ring, consensus pound-for-pound boxing great Canelo Alvarez battles WBA super-middleweight champion Callum Smith with the WBC title also on the line.

This electric main event occurs on Saturday, Dec. 19, live from the Alamodome in San Antonio, TX. A limited audience will be present, and the full fight card can be streamed through DAZN starting at 8 p.m ET.

Alvarez (53-1-1, 36 KOs) wanted to fight long ago, but he ran into contractual disagreements with DAZN and former promoter Golden Boy and its owner Oscar De La Hoya. After months of initial legal drama, Alvarez, DAZN, and Golden Boy came to an agreement that allowed Alvarez to become a free agent.

Ironically, Alvarez agreed to terms with DAZN and Matchroom boxing to fight Smith in his return bout in a one-off fight deal where Alvarez is acting as his own promoter in conjunction with Matchroom.

Smith (27-0, 19 KOs) is rated by Boxrec.com as the second-best super middleweight in the world. Alvarez has the top sport in their rankings. Smith won the WBA title by knocking out George Groves in round 7 back in 2018. Alvarez has the “regular” version of the WBA title that he won after stopping Rocky Fielding in 2018.

The WBC belt became vacant after David Benavidez failed to make weight for his title defense against Roamer Alexis Angulo in August. The winner of Alvarez vs. Smith will be the unified WBC and WBA champion and the ruler of the super middleweight division.

Alvarez is a solid betting favorite, according to Oddsshark.com, but he’s giving up 7 inches in height to the 6-foot-3 Smith. Smith also enjoys an 8-inch reach advantage.

Will the smaller Alvarez be able to conquer the much larger Smith? Follow along with FanSided below to find out.
