Who is more worthy of a College Football Playoff berth: Notre Dame or Texas A&M?

With the College Football Playoff selection show just a day away, many fans spent their Saturday taking in conference championship action. Perhaps the biggest game was the ACC Championship Game between Notre Dame and Clemson, two teams appeared to be destined for a CFP berth regardless of the result. Then, the game started.

Clemson avenged their loss to Notre Dame earlier this year, defeating them 34-10 to win the ACC title and essentially clinch a spot in the College Football Playoff. As for the Fighting Irish, a berth isn’t a given considering they got their doors kicked in for 60 minutes of game-time.

With that, many are wondering whether Notre Dame retains a spot in the semifinals or if a team like Texas A&M can take their spot.  Let’s look into it?

Even with the blowout, Notre Dame should make the College Football Playoff

Even though Brian Kelly’s squad looked lethargic in the home of the Carolina Panthers, they hold significant advantages over Texas A&M. Notre Dame faced teams with a higher winning percentage (.487) and held a 4-1 record over teams above .500. Meanwhile, the Aggies hold a 2-1 record over teams with a winning record and their opponents held a cumulative .443 winning percentage. Oh, and Notre Dame has a 2-1 record against teams in the top 25, as opposed to Texas A&M, who held a 1-1 record.

For the Aggies, their best bet was for Notre Dame to defeat the Trevor Lawrence-led Tigers for the second time this season. Unfortunately for them, that didn’t happen. But considering Notre Dame was blown out, you can’t rule out the selection committee catapulting Texas A&M into the top four.

We should get a better view of the College Football Playoff field following the LSU-Ole Miss game and the SEC Championship Game between Alabama and Florida. Until then, both Notre Dame and Texas A&M will have to anxiously wait out the next 24 hours to learn of their playoff fate.
