If the Cowboys want to add some additional draft capital to their arsenal, they need to consider trading off a position of strength — wide receiver.

Back in April, no one thought that Oklahoma wideout CeeDee Lamb would drop all the way down to the 17th pick in the NFL Draft, but he did. You can’t fault the Cowboys for selecting Lamb, but that gave them an embarrassment of riches at the wide receiver position. Yet, that gives them the luxury of move one. And the player being moved won’t be Amari Cooper or Lamb. It will be Michael Gallup.

Lamb is expected to be the Cowboys’ top wideout for at least the next four years, and he’s on a cheap rookie contract. As for Cooper, the veteran just signed a five-year, $100 million contract. It’s possible the Cowboys could want to part ways with that lucrative deal, but it’s not exactly the wisest decision to trade away Dak Prescott’s favorite weapon, especially if the team is adamant on re-signing the quarterback to a long-term contract extension. That leaves Gallup as the odd man out.

As of this writing, Gallup has recorded 145 catches for 2,261 yards and 10 touchdowns through the first two-plus seasons of his career.

There are teams that would love to add a player of Gallup’s talent to their roster, and the Cowboys can capitalize on that. You don’t think a team like the New York Jets or New England Patriots would trade a Day 2 draft pick for Gallup? Of course they would! Considering that Gallup is a free agent following the 2021 season, Jones might as well get what he can for him.
