2. Caris LeVert has a point to prove

LeVert has endured a really stressful offseason. The return of Irving and Durant to full health has forced him to transition from the team’s first offensive option to being Nash’s sixth man. If that wasn’t enough, he’s also seen his name prominently mentioned as potential trade bait to bring a third superstar to Brooklyn.

Add all that up and it would have been easy for LeVert to stumble out of the gate on Opening Night. Instead, LeVert approached the game against Golden State with real fire. He played with exceptional energy during each of his 25 minutes. That’s a great sign moving forward for Nash and his coaching staff.

Some may try to criticize LeVert for trying to do too much on the offensive end, but that’s something the Nets can live with on the second unit. LeVert needing to take a few ill-advised shots with the bench group is a price worth paying to keep him engaged.

The fact that he filled the box score on Opening Night shouldn’t be overlooked. Nine rebounds and five assists for a wing off the bench is elite production for any team. If LeVert continues to play with this much focus he’s going to be a nightmare for Brooklyn’s opponents. He may be the team’s third star even if he isn’t a member of the starting five.
