2. Patrick Mahomes, QB (Kansas City Chiefs)

There is a very peculiar feeling that sets in when Patrick Mahomes is placed at No. 2 on an MVP list. The eye-test for his MVP candidacy is so vivid that any seeding other than No. 1 feels criminal. But his green-and-gold opponent simply has better numbers through Week 15.

Which franchise would be in worse shape? The Chiefs without Mahomes or the Packers sans Rodgers? That’s likely the question to ponder when assessing this season’s MVP race.

Mahomes had his second-least accurate game of the season vs. the New Orleans Saints. Unsurprisingly, the Chiefs still claimed victory in a 32-29 dogfight over Sean Payton’s crew. The win strengthened Kansas City’s stranglehold on the AFC — especially after the Steelers defecated once again on Monday Night Football.

The Chiefs quarterback will “probably” win this award — no matter how good Rodgers finishes the season. The league has its poster boy in Mahomes, and he deserves that title. In a statistical vacuum, however, Rodgers is actually a tad more proficient.
