The Eagles said all the right things about Wentz’s future with the team when they made the decision to bench him in favor of Jalen Hurts, but it’s clear his time in Philadelphia has come to an end. One of this front office’s greatest challenges in the offseason will be to find Wentz a new home via a trade that brings them something of actual value in return.

Wentz still has a small fortune left on the four-year, $128 million deal he signed with the Eagles last offseason. Ironically, that contract was lauded as a potential bargain at the time it was consummated. Now it serves as a millstone around the Eagles’ necks as they engage other teams in trade talks about the enigmatic signal-caller.

The good news for the Eagles is that other teams are always willing to gamble on big-time talent. Wentz was awful this season, but prominent offensive coaches with healthy egos will believe they can fix his tragic flaws. That means Philadelphia can find a taker for Wentz and his bloated contract.

The question is whether or not their front office can actually secure anything other than salary cap relief in the deal. Eagles fans dreaming of receiving a first-round pick in exchange for their former franchise quarterback need to dismiss that notion immediately. Philadelphia’s front office would do backflips to receive a Day 2 pick in exchange for their intensely distressed asset. Wentz will be sold on the cheap to any team willing to take on his contract this offseason.
