Patrick Mahomes may have just retired as a Chiefs WR on Twitter

Patrick Mahomes admitted that he’s going to quite attempting to be a wide receiver following Week 16.

As we’ve seen through his first three seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs, Patrick Mahomes is one hell of a quarterback. There’s no denying that, since he’s listed as the favorite to win the NFL MVP award for the second time in his young career. But even an athlete like Mahomes isn’t perfect at everything.

Case in point, Mahomes attempted to play wide receiver on a trick play in Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons, but it ended miserably. 24 hours later, Mahomes declared that his career as a wideout “might be over.”

The trick play that didn’t work

During the Week 16 matchup, the Chiefs decided to pull off some trickery against the porous Falcons defense. Running back Darrel Williams took the snap, handed it off to Mahomes, who then lateraled it to wide receiver Sammy Watkins. The quarterback then ran along Atlanta’s sidelines and Watkins through it his way. The problem was that Falcons safety Keanu Neal completely mossed Mahomes and secured the interception.

Shortly after Mahomes made his announcement, Chiefs wide receiver Tyreek Hill couldn’t help himself, as he made fun of his quarterback.

Luckily for Mahomes, the failed play didn’t hurt the Chiefs, as they went on to defeat the Falcons 17-14. As a result, Kansas City clinched the top seed in the AFC and home-field advantage throughout the NFL playoffs. Considering that the Chiefs have everything locked up, you likely won’t see Mahomes and the starters play much in their regular-season finale against the Los Angeles Chargers.

We credit the Chiefs for trying to confuse the lowly Falcons, we’d suggest not attempting that play in the postseason and retire it altogether. Mahomes is a superior athlete, he just doesn’t have the hops to play receiver in the NFL.
