28. Olympic training at home

U.S. Olympic Swimmer Michael Andrew is coached by his father Peter as he trains in a residential pool on May 6, 2020, in San Diego, California. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many elite athletes have been forced to adjust training locations and regimens.

When it became clear the pandemic would be taking a toll on elite Olympic athletes and their training routines, Getty Images began looking for these athletes who were going to extremes to train and not lose their competitive edge. Olympic Swimmer Michael Andrew was having trouble finding places to train when his training pool and the beaches were forced to shut down. Luckily, he was able to find a nearby homeowner with a single lane lap pool in his backyard. From there, I used a water housing for my camera and shot from the water in the pool as he trained. It isn’t every day you see an Olympian training in a backyard pool, moving through the water so eloquently, so it was an incredible moment to witness and capture.
