22. Grieving for Kobe

This had to be the saddest event I’ve attended in my 23 years of working as a staff photographer with Getty Images. This was the first game back for the Los Angeles Lakers after the tragic death of Kobe Bryant a few days earlier. Usher was singing Amazing Grace in a tribute at center court before the game started and the stadium was following along watching the jumbotron. I peered over to the Lakers bench and saw incredibly somber faces, with LeBron James and Quinn Cook unable to hold back their emotions and tears. The fitting purple eerie cast came from the jumbotron as the only source of light throughout the entire arena.
