20. 100,000 empty seats
Horses and Jockeys race into the final stretch during the first day of live horse racing at Belmont Park on Jun. 3, 2020, in Elmont, New York. Horse racing was shut down in New York on Mar. 15 due to the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic and has been cleared by officials to resume without fans in attendance.
This was the first day horse racing resumed at Belmont Park and the first sporting event of any kind happening in New York up to this moment since lockdown. I remember feeling very cautious about how I worked. Everyone was on edge that day and it had set the tone for working sporting events throughout the pandemic. I wanted to show the emptiness of the stands while the race was going on. Normally, Belmont can hold almost 100,000 fans and there was hardly anyone in the building.
