3 NFL teams that should give Lincoln Riley a blank check to leave Oklahoma
By John Buhler
The chance to work with Trevor Lawrence is worth leaving the Big 12
Without hesitation, the best potential head-coaching opening this cycle is the Jacksonville Jaguars. This franchise has a well-respected owner in Shahid Khan with deep pockets and a willingness to spend. They have fired their long-time general manager David Caldwell. While Doug Marrone is still the head coach, he is not the one who will be coaching Trevor Lawrence in the NFL.
With Jacksonville locking up the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, the Jaguars have won the Trevor Lawrence sweepstakes. His 6-foot-6 frame and flowing blonde hair will be the greatest thing to happen to Duval County since Lynyrd Skynyrd. Simply put, it is not a matter of who wants this job, but rather who Khan and his hand-picked general manager want to have it.
While it is not to say Riley has impenetrable job security in Norman, very few NFL head coaches can go to sleep at night as easily as Riley can, knowing they are not going to lose their job any time soon. So to leave a top-four college gig, which is exactly how you define the one at Oklahoma, you must only do so for an opportunity you will only get once in your lifetime. This would be that job.
By combining forces with Lawrence in Jacksonville, Riley could become the Sunshine State’s most beloved head ball coach since The Head Ball Coach Steve Spurrier. He can still keep wearing a visor, and even it toss it on the ground if he likes. However, he will not be doing it all that much, as he will have left Oklahoma for Duval to coach the best quarterbacking talent since John Elway.
If Riley leaves Oklahoma for the NFL this offseason, what team should he depart for?
