Matt Ryan is not getting any younger
With Wilson projecting as one of the first quarterbacks taken off the board in the upcoming draft, three of the teams poised to be picking in the top five are in need of a long-term signal-caller. One team Wilson could fall to in the No. 3 to No. 5-range will be the Atlanta Falcons. They still have Matt Ryan, but we have to wonder how much he has left in the tank beyond the 2020 season.
The idea behind drafting Wilson would be to have him sit and learn behind Ryan for at least a year or so. Though Wilson may be ready at some point to start next season as a rookie, he is going to have to be extra special in camp and in practice to usurp a future Pro Football Hall of Famer at any point in year one. However, year two could be his if Atlanta does decide to move off Ryan in 2022.

Should Sam Darnold stay or should he go?
What this all comes down to with the New York Jets is if they believe in Sam Darnold or not. He will be entering the fourth year of his rookie deal out of USC. Frankly, it does not matter if the Jets extend the fifth-year option to Darnold because if the Jets draft Wilson, he is their Week 1 starter. New York may not end up drafting Wilson inside the top three, but this is the growing consensus.
Will Wilson be able to get the Jets out of their perpetual quagmire as an organization? Unlikely, but Wilson at least offers the organization a reset to rebuild with relatively new general manager Joe Douglas at the helm. If Gang Green does end up retaining head coach Adam Gase for some reason, they deserve what is coming for them. Only draft Wilson top-three if he is not coached by Gase.
