Taylor Heinicke showed off his athleticism with a must-see diving touchdown.

Perhaps Taylor Heinicke should have been starting for the Washington Football Team all along.

The former XFL backup quarterback got the starting nod Saturday night for Washington after Alex Smith was ruled out. Fans may have assumed a blowout was coming, but Heinicke had other plans. He even flashed his wheels in the third quarter with a touchdown run capped off by an Olympic-level dive to clip the pylon and get the touchdown.

Heinicke has Washington in the game

So much for Tom Brady rolling in and making quick work of the Football Team. Heinicke’s heroic dive made the score 18-16 and put the Team right back into the game. Don’t forget, they are the home team in this one.

Washington decided to move on from Dwayne Haskins and that decision seems to have been the right one. Heinicke may have limited starting experience, but did join the NFL in 2015 and has experience playing behind some great quarterbacks.

His mobility is what sets him apart from other backups. It is hard to think of many reserve quarterbacks who can leap from several yards out and score such a dramatic touchdown. The entire offense is more dynamic with Heinicke calling the shots compared to when Smith is out there.

Heinicke taking down Brady in the Wild Card round would be quite the way to cap off Saturday’s first ever Wild Card triple-header. The defense is doing its job, and now it will be up to the former Old Dominion quarterback to pull off the miracle.
