The Bears could yet lose one of their playmakers in the offseason if star wide receiver Allen Robinson departs in free agency. Chicago should do its best to ensure that scenario does not come to pass but, if it does, former Golden Gopher Bateman stands out as an obvious replacement.

At 6ft and 1in, Bateman would offer a contested-catch threat akin to Robinson. However, he is one of the most versatile receivers in the class and has several other strings to his bow.

Bateman, who has frequently been effectively used in the ‘big slot’ role as well as an outside receiver, wins frequently with his well-refined route-running, his surprising lower-body agility enabling him to create separation with his stem and mid-route through double moves.

Almost as impressive after the catch as he is at the catch point – where he demonstrates outstanding body control – Bateman has the skill set to eventually blossom into a number one receiver at the highest level and stands as one of the more underrated players in the class.

Whether or not the Bears hang on to Robinson, the Bears need to add better depth at their offensive skill positions. Bateman fits the bill and should be firmly on Chicago’s radar.
