2. Mac Jones, Quarterback, Alabama

Jones’ draft stock is flying up team’s boards after his electric performance against Ohio State in the National Championship game. It’s now very possible he won’t be on the board when Chicago goes on the clock at No. 20.

Even if he is, the Bears should avoid the temptation to select him and install him as Trubisky’s successor. He’s not the right quarterback prospect to elevate the questionable supporting offensive cast in Chicago. Nagy needs a potential All-Pro if he wants to transform this team into Super Bowl contenders in the near future. Jones doesn’t have that kind of upside.

The elite talent that surrounded Jones on every snap at Alabama actually works against his draft evaluation. There’s very little tape on what he does when he’s required to improvise and make a play under pressure. He’s not going to enjoy superiority at every skill position at the NFL level. It’s fair to wonder how he would be evaluated had he played at a different college.

If the Bears want to replace Trubisky with this pick they need to swing for the fences. Finding a guy who can turn into an adequate starter isn’t going to drastically change the franchise’s fortunes. Jones is too safe a pick for the Bears at 20.
