NFL free agency rumors: 3 players the Browns should target this offseason
Denzel Ward is a staple in coverage on the outside. He’ll soon be worth a sizable extension with the team or on the open market. Former LSU star Greedy Williams was supposed to be the answer on the opposite side. He still can’t remain healthy after two seasons.
Williams should be given another chance to try and compete for the starting job. Ronnie Harrison would be a cheap upgrade over Karl Joseph at the strong safety position. Grant Delpit was expected to start in the free safety role, but he suffered a torn Achilles. Andrew Sendejo has been a liability downfield.
Anthony Harris has been one of the best cover safeties in football over the past two seasons. His role is far from limited as a deep man used in Cover 1 sets. While his coverage skills are near flawless, Harris also is a quality tackler in the open field.
The Browns’ secondary allowed an average of 247.6 yards per play. They also gave up 31 touchdowns in coverage. Harris wouldn’t be able to fix all the problems, but his rangy style of play would force quarterbacks to hesitate when throwing the deep ball.
Secondary players are so essential to a team’s success nowadays. The Browns would be foolish not to open their wallets for a player with Harris’ skills.
