24. Roy Williams – Texas Longhorns
It feels like a lifetime ago that Roy Williams was destroying defenses before most TVs were in HD, but Williams’ career at Texas was one of the best in school history. He had 3,800 career yards, 36 career touchdowns, on 241 career catches. He was on the Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year and the first-team All-Big 12 three times. He was an All-American in his senior year.
Williams still holds the records for most 100-yard games, career yards and career receptions in Texas history. He’s the only player in Texas history with three seasons of at least 60 receptions and eight touchdowns. Williams was not only great, but he was consistent.
The last five games of his junior season were one of the best stretches of the decade. He had 741 yards and nine touchdowns. In five games! It put him on the map as a star receiver, building a ton of momentum going into his senior year. He could have left for the NFL off that momentum, but he decided to give it one more go.
He’s one of the most decorated Texas players in history. He really just missed the glory years, with a young Vince Young taking over for six games his senior year. He mostly dealt with an injury-prone Chris Simms, although he was there for every game his senior season. They were great together and he likely would have put up monster numbers his senior year if Simms was still there. He still put up great numbers with two different quarterbacks on a rebuilding Texas team.
