Browns re-signing former Steelers wideout to one-year deal
By Mark Powell
The Browns have added to their receiving corps in the form of a former rival.
Cleveland’s wideouts are headlined by the likes of Odell Beckham, Jr., Jarvis Landry and even Donovan Peoples-Jones, so why would they need more depth? Injuries played a role in Cleveland’s eventual demise, and although the Browns looked impressive offensively thanks to Baker Mayfield taking another step in his development and a capable run game, adding a familiar face like Ryan Switzer to the group isn’t a bad idea.
Switzer was a former kick returner and Ben Roethlisberger third-down favorite in Pittsburgh. While Steelers fans rightfully pointed out his limitations, it’s amazing how far being in Big Ben’s good graces can get you in Pittsburgh. In Cleveland, though, he’ll have to prove himself.
What does Switzer bring to the Browns?
Exactly what he brought to the Steel City. Switzer is a one-trick pony in the NFL. He’s a capable return man in that he’ll rarely turn the ball over, and in five-wide sets he’s often overlooked. He’s not much for the fanbase to get excited about, but every professional football team needs a few Switzers, either on the practice squad or on special teams.
Switzer spent the end of last season with the Browns, but didn’t see much playing time. By bringing him back on a one-year deal, it’s clear Cleveland liked what they saw in practice.
The Browns are building from an unfamiliar position now. Cleveland is expected to contend next season after beating the rival Steelers in the Wild Card round this year. Such a monumental step isn’t something this franchise is used to. We’ll see if savvy additions can make the Browns more than just a feel-good story.
