Cowboys: 3 backup plans if Dallas moves on from Dak Prescott
By John Buhler
Maturity and a stabilizing presence is exactly what they need in a stop-gap
One player who will be a valuable commodity in his free agency is Indianapolis Colts quarterback Jacoby Brissett. There is a strong possibility that Brissett stays in Indianapolis, as he could be in line to be their starting quarterback for the third time in five years. However, the Colts may be in the market to draft or trade for someone and may want to give the backup role to Jacob Eason.
And it is not just the Colts who could be interested in a player like Brissett. If Dallas were to move off Prescott and not want to give Dalton a second contract, Brissett could come in and keep the team afloat while they look for a long-term solution in future NFL Drafts. Since being traded to the Colts, Brissett has already filled in twice as the starter for Andrew Luck in 2017 and again in 2019.
If everything pans out, Brissett could quarterback the Cowboys to a division title in the weak NFC East or have Dallas contending for one of three Wild Card spots in the conference. He is a player McCarthy and his staff can trust to give the starting role to Week 1 and see where the season takes them. Again, Brissett is a top-tier backup and a high-quality, stop-gap starting quarterback.
Brissett may stick with the Colts to keep playing for Frank Reich. He could also follow his former Colts offensive coordinator Nick Sirianni to the Philadelphia Eagles, for what it is worth. Then again, Philadelphia already has Carson Wentz and Jalen Hurts with plenty of other more pressing issues to navigate. Ultimately, Brissett would be a less expensive, temporary version of Prescott.
