College basketball rankings: Alabama gets best AP Top 25 ranking in 14 years
The college basketball rankings this week sees Alabama with its highest spot in the AP Top 25 in 14 years while Gonzaga and Baylor remain on top.
In what’s been a strange college basketball season thus far, Gonzaga, Baylor, and Villanova have certainly offered some consistency as the best teams in the country.
Mark Few’s Bulldogs came in at No. 1 with a still-perfect 15-0 record while Scott Drew and Baylor are at No. 2 atop the Big 12 at 14-0, each maintaining their spots from the previous 10 weeks. Villanova hasn’t taken a loss since November and is still at No. 3.
Juwan Howard has the Michigan Wolverines ranked in the top 5 for the second straight year, despite Michigan Athletics announcing that they’ll be placed on a two-week pause due to COVID-19 precautions. Shaka Smart and the Texas Longhorns round out the top 5 despite Smart announcing this morning that he has tested positive for COVID-19. Houston, Iowa, and Virginia help to round out the top 10 with Alabama making a surprise placement.
Alabama ranked No. 9 in highest AP Top 25 ranking in 14 years
Alabama is known as a football school and is coming off of yet another national championship win, but its basketball program is starting to make some noise. With a No. 9 ranking, Alabama sees its highest placement since 2007 when they ranked as high as No. 8. The Crimson Tide made a nine-spot jump from No. 18 to No. 9 for this week’s ranking.
Missouri knocked off previously ranked No. 6 Tennessee, who fell all the way to No. 18 after losing to Florida in the same week. Kansas and Creighton each fell six spots and come in at Nos. 15 and 17 respectively.
UConn, Clemson, and Oregon all fell out of the Top 25 while Oklahoma made its first appearance of the season to the Top 25. Florida State and Louisville are back on the list after having fallen out of the Top 25 in recent weeks.
