Bills free agency news, Matt Milano

3. Matt Milano

Milano is one free agent that will likely exceed the Bills’ buying power this offseason, but they should try to get creative to find a way to keep hold of their versatile linebacker. Trying to replace him with a rookie could cause Buffalo’s defense to take a significant step back in 2021.

It’s easy for some fans to get caught up in what Milano doesn’t do. He’s a questionable tackler who can be a liability when the Bills line up against physical rushing attacks. Setting a formidable edge against the run isn’t why Buffalo needs to re-sign Milano.

The 25-year-old linebacker excels when he’s asked to drop in space and make plays in coverage. He’s particularly well suited to run with running backs in single coverage. Asking any linebacker to cover a slot receiver is a tactical mistake, but Milano covers it up far better than most of his peers.

Unfortunately for Buffalo, NFL teams are getting increasingly more aware of the need to have a versatile linebacker capable of being a top-notch cover guy. That’s going to get Milano paid this offseason despite his struggles with injury in 2020. Time will tell if the Bills can come up with enough cash to keep him in the fold.
