College football duos: Ranking the 32 best dynamic duos in modern history
By Nick Villano
32. Kenjon Barner and LaMichael James, Oregon
The days of the powerhouse Oregon teams are not that far off. Right after the USC dynasty took over the Pac 12, it seemed like the Ducks were right there to take the torch away. LaMichael James and Kenjon Barner would usher in a new era in Chip Kelly’s offense. They were one of the most electric backfield duos of all time.
James was the biggest playmaker for his entire career at Oregon. Of course, his career wasn’t without controversy, but when he was on the field there was nobody like him. He had three years with over 1,500 yards on the ground and he broke 2,000 yards from scrimmage in his junior year. James was insane, plain and simple.
Barner’s role really expanded in 2011. The country knew James was the best running back, but soon they would find out just how good the duo was. It’s rare to have two running backs with the skill these two had. James was a Heisman candidate, but when Barner was on the field, he was just as likely to break one for a touchdown.
Just look at their collective averages. James averaged 6.6 yards per carry over his three years at Oregon. Barner averaged 6.2. They were both unequivocally great. When James left school after the 2011 season, Barner ran for 1,700 yards.
During the 2011 season, James failed to gain 100 yards twice in Pac 12 play. In the rivalry game against USC, Barner ran for 123 yards and two touchdowns. James had eight games that season with 100-plus yards. Barner had four games breaking the century mark. These two were one of the best running back duos in the history of the sport.
