Watson’s brilliance covered up for the lack of playmakers on the offensive side of the ball for Houston in 2020. The moment he’s traded, the Texans suddenly become a team desperately in need of playmakers.

Samuel isn’t a great wide receiver, but he is a guy that can make plays in space. The Panthers worked hard to get him the ball by any means necessary in 2020. He caught 77 balls for Carolina last year, but he also ran the ball 41 times in Matt Rhule’s offense.

The Texans are going to need guys to soak up touches and make big plays in 2021. The fact that Samuel can likely be had via a modest contract makes him an attractive target for Houston’s front office. Samuel is another young player who can help the Texans right away while still profiling as a member of their emerging corps.

Samuel’s market is difficult to predict. He’s not good enough as a pure wide receiver to fit some schemes around the league. The Texans should be willing to make that sacrifice. His versatility can give their offense a much-needed boost after Watson leaves town.
