Houston Texans free agency 2021: Top 5 targets
1. JuJu Smith-Schuster
Part of Watson’s desire to leave Houston can be chalked up to the lack of talent surrounding him at the offensive skill positions. The bizarre decision to trade DeAndre Hopkins last offseason might have sealed the team’s fate with their franchise quarterback.
Smith-Schuster could give the Texans a big boost of talent on the outside. He’s a big name for NFL fans, but he’s significantly behind several other receivers on teams’ shopping lists this offseason. He’s going to get less money than luminaries like Chris Godwin and Kenny Golladay.
That doesn’t mean the Texans can get him on the cheap, but they should be able to avoid making him anything close to the highest-paid wideout in football. If they can land him for anything under $18 million per season it will be a team that ages well for Houston.
Some teams might shy away from Smith-Schuster because of his need to play significant snaps in the slot, but that shouldn’t be a deterrent for the Texans. They need a wide receiver who can keep the chains moving and make the occasional big play. Smith-Schuster won’t solve their skill position issues but signing him would be a big step forwards for the Texans.
