The Kansas City Chiefs being back in the Super Bowl after winning it all last year has us all thinking, who was the last NFL team to repeat?

Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs are looking to defend their Super Bowl title on Sunday, Feb. 7 against possibly the most formidable opponent ever in Tom Brady. Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers fell to the Chiefs by three points back in their late-November meeting and will surely be ready to defend their home field on the biggest stage the NFL has to offer.

As Patrick Mahomes attempts to get the Chiefs another Super Bowl win, we started thinking about the last team to win back-to-back Super Bowl championships.

It’s been some time since we’ve seen a repeat occur in the NFL. Of course, the first team to do it was the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowls I & II, coached by none other than the man whom the championship trophy is named for, Vince Lombardi.

Since then only six other NFL franchises have turned the trick. The Miami Dolphins got it done in the 1972 and ’73 seasons. The Pittsburgh Steelers have done it twice and are the only team to have accomplished that feat, doing so in the 1974-75 and 1978-79 seasons.

The San Fransisco 49ers repeated to close out the 1980s while the Dallas Cowboys beat the Buffalo Bills in the big game twice in consecutive years to earn their repeat titles. The Denver Broncos repeated successfully under the regime of none other than John Elway in the 1997 and ’98 seasons.

But who was the most recent NFL team to do it?

Who was the last NFL to repeat as Super Bowl champions?

The last team to succeed in repeating as Super Bowl champions was led by the guy trying to stop Mahomes from doing it. Tom Brady led the 2003 and ’04 New England Patriots to back-to-back rings and three Super Bowl wins in four years in the early 2000s.

Will this spell bad news for Mahomes and the Chiefs? That still remains to be seen but fans can only hope the matchup lives up to the incredible hype.
