1. Justin Simmons

It may seem strange to say that re-signing a safety would be a 5-11 team’s top priority in the offseason. That’s just how important Simmons is to the Broncos’ defense.

If he’s permitted to leave in free agency he’ll likely be the No. 1 safety on most team’s boards. He’s rare in that he’s capable of playing at a high-level as a roaming free safety and he can also positively impact his team’s efforts closer to the line of scrimmage. Playing both phases at a high level makes Simmons a relative unicorn in the modern NFL.

His ability to produce turnovers at a high rate is vital to Denver’s hopes of taking a step forward in 2021. He picked off five passes a season ago and it’s possible that number could increase if the Broncos fix their pass rush moving forward.

The challenge for Denver will be swallowing hard and paying the premium salary required to keep hold of a player of his caliber. They shouldn’t go over $18 million per season, but anything less is a price they should pay.
