2021 American Express Top Tier Picks

Sungjae Im – 9,900 DK

Im started the season off hot. He top-5’d at the TOC in Hawaii. He followed up his ball-striking clinic with a less than impressive effort at the Sony. This course sets up better for Im. And he will not have to deal with the Pro-Am aspect, which he is on the record of not preferring. I like a bounce back week for Im. I will always be on Im when he tees it up a 3rd week in a row. Especially the way his irons are clicking. I guarantee that his putting will rebound, and I think this is the week.

Scottie Scheffler – 9,500 DK

Why does Scottie Scheffler rank so highly in my model? He is the 3rd ranked golfer. It is likely due to his birdie or better prowess on easy Bermudagrass courses. I will follow the model this week. He has a solid history here, and he is scoring. Especially on par 5’s. There are 4 this week to exploit on each 18 that they tee it up. Scott finished 3rd here last year, shooting a -8 in two rounds at the Stadium Course at PGA West.

2021 American Express Value Picks

Michael Thompson – 7,100 DK

Not a fan of Thompson’s long term game. But I love the setup this week. And he leads the field in putting over the past month, and his approach game is 2nd. He is an excellent Bermuda putter, and his approach game has been trending in the right direction. I love this price for a golfer that we have seen way more than the rest of this field. Putt for dough play of the week.

Brian Gay – 6,700 DK

Brian Gay is a gem this week. Over the past month, he ranks 4th in the field on approach. He is historically a top Bermuda putter. And he has a win in his last three starts. He strikes the ball well, he putts well on Bermuda. Yes, he does not bomb the golf ball, but I like his consistence and upside for the price. I will be all over this birdie maker at the 2021 American Express.
