3 free agents the Eagles should avoid in the 2021 offseason
2. Richard Sherman
The idea of adding a veteran corner with a history of high-level team success should appeal to the Eagles this offseason. Sherman just happens to have lost too much mobility to really help Philadelphia transition their secondary into the modern NFL.
The Eagles need to add a corner who has the speed required to match up with the talented No. 1 receivers they’re required to face in the NFC East. Sherman no longer has the speed necessary to hold up in man coverage. He needs to sign with a team that’s comfortable providing him solid safety protection in zone looks. That does not match up well with how Philadelphia likes to operate on defense.
If the Eagles are going to dip into free agency to improve their options at corner they need to look for a more athletic option. Stealing Mike Hilton away from the Steelers or Shaquill Griffin from the Seahawks would be much better choices than overpaying a guy like Sherman.
It’s time for the Eagles to fully commit to their youth movement on defense. Treading water with a guy like Sherman who doesn’t really fit their scheme would be disastrous. He’s a big-name player that Philadelphia should avoid at all costs.
