The injury issues the Eagles faced at left tackle didn’t get enough attention last year. Andre Dillard went out early which caused Jason Peters to try to fill in. Suffice it to say, Philadelphia got below-average protection on the blindside in 2020.

That will likely push the Eagles to improve their depth at tackle this offseason. That’s a perfectly reasonable strategy. The key for Philadelphia will be to execute that strategy in the right manner.

Signing a potentially overpriced veteran like Okung is not something the Eagles should consider. Like Fuller, he also represents a huge injury risk heading into 2021. Similar to Sherman, he is no longer an elite player when he is able to make his way onto the field.

The lack of quality available tackles in free agency will tempt a team to pay Okung like he’s still an All-Pro capable of holding up for a full 16-game slate. The Eagles cannot afford to be the team that deludes themselves into arriving at that conclusion. Shopping in the bargain basement of free agency or the draft is the right way for Philadelphia to address their tackle issues.
