Eagles: 3 teams that should trade for Carson Wentz
By John Buhler
A reunion with Frank Reich would bring the very best out of him
Without question, the best potential landing spot for Wentz would be to the Indianapolis Colts. Last year’s starting quarterback Philip Rivers has retired and do you really think owner Jim Irsay is going to want to role with Jacoby Brissett as his franchise’s starting quarterback for the third time in five years? Brissett is a fine player, but he simply does not move the needle like Wentz does.
So besides obvious need and playing in the opposite conference from the Eagles, the biggest reason why Wentz to Indianapolis makes a ton of sense is that Frank Reich is the Colts head coach. Reich was Wentz’s offensive coordinator during that magical 2017 season in Philadelphia. His work on Doug Pederson’s staff that year helped him get the Colts’ head-coaching gig in 2018.
What makes this the best landing spot for Wentz is we have seen what he can do in Reich’s offensive system. If he were to go to other teams in dire need of a franchise quarterback, we cannot say the same things about their offensive systems in place. While they could be good fits for him, the best indicator for future success is past performance, and Wentz thrived under Reich.
Overall, the Eagles are going to look for the best return for their asset should they trade him. While many of us want to see a potential Wentz/Reich reunion in Indianapolis, that may not be in the cards if Chris Ballard and Howie Roseman cannot strike up a deal. Either way, this is a move that makes the Colts the favorite to win the AFC South next season or at least make the playoffs again.
Ultimately, Nick Sirianni needs to quickly assess if Wentz will be part of his Eagles regime. Philadelphia hired him because he worked closely under Reich last year with the Colts and the then-San Diego Chargers before that. Maybe Sirianni and Wentz can work it out? If not, it might be all about Jalen Hurts in Philadelphia next season. They could also draft Wentz’s success, too.
What other NFL teams should seriously consider orchestrating a trade for Wentz this offseason?
