George Fant was signed last offseason after three seasons in Seattle. There, he seemed to move around the line and play various positions. With the Jets, he played right tackle on the opposite side of standout first-round pick Mekhi Becton.

In year-one with the Jets, Fant did have runs of form where he played well. He wasn’t spectacular, but he also was not terrible. Sometimes, that is all you can ask for. Although, the Jets could save quite a bit if they decided to cut the veteran this offseason.

Now, yes, moving on from players who play key positions like tackle can be tough. Especially when there does not appear to be an overwhelming number of better options on the free-agent market. On the market, there are some veterans, and maybe Douglas and his front office find someone they like in the draft. Or, maybe they can sign someone like Cam Robinson and see if he can flip to the other side and play right tackle.

Of course, these are all hypotheticals and Robinson would not come cheap. Also, he would want to get paid left tackle money. Paying him that number to gamble and play him at right tackle could be deemed too risky. But, it’s a spitball idea.

When Douglas signed Fant, it seemed as though he structured the deal so it was easy to get out from under. According to Spotrac.com, his base salary is $8 million with a $9.35 million cap hit in 2021 and a $10.65 million cap hit in 2022 with an out this offseason.
