Red Sox: 3 players who won’t be on the Opening Day roster
By Scott Rogust
Connor Wong was one of the return pieces that the Red Sox got from the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for Mookie Betts and pitcher David Price. Once the trade became official, Wong became the organization’s 18th overall prospect in the pipeline.
There is plenty of buzz surrounding Wong, especially considering what he did in his last full season in the minors in 2019. In 111 games across Class-A Advanced and Double-A, Wong slashed .281/.336/.541 while recording 24 home runs, 82 RBI, 119 hits and 56 runs scored. Wong did not get to play this past season due to coronavirus pandemic.
While MLB.com lists Wong’s ETA as 2021, there is not much space for him to make the Opening Day roster.
At catcher, the Red Sox already have Christian Vazquez as the starter and Kevin Plawecki serving as backup. Even though FanSided MLB insider Robert Murray reported that the Los Angeles Angels were interested in Vazquez, it’s doubtful the Red Sox would actually move on from him, as they have a high asking price for his services.
Wong can also play at second and third base. The problem is that those positions are filled by Rafael Devers and Enrique Hernandez, the former Los Angeles Dodger. Listed behind them on the depth chart are Michael Chavis and Christian Arroyo. Oh, and there’s also the report that the Red Sox are among a half-dozen teams interested in former Astros infielder Marwin Gonzalez, per Robert Murray. While it is entirely possible that Wong makes his big league debut in 2021, it probably won’t happen for Boston’s regular-season opener.
