Steelers trade rumors, Chase Claypool

2. Chase Claypool plus a pick

The Jets know they need to add playmakers this offseason if they want to meaningful upgrade their offense. Claypool is the sort of wide receiver who could immediately become their quarterback’s No. 1 option in 2021.

The Steelers will be justified in asking the Jets to consider Claypool as the unquestioned centerpiece of the deal. He’s not quite enough to land Darnold on his own, but he’s a starting wide receiver on a very good contract. That gets Pittsburgh almost all the way there.

Negotiating the potential draft pick added to Claypool could be a contentious process for both teams. The Jets will insist it should be a Day One or Day Two selection in this year’s draft. The Steelers will laugh that notion off.

The compromise will depend on whether or not New York is willing to accept a pick that will be realized in a future draft. The Steelers should offer a fourth round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft to get the obligation off their books immediately. If the Jets prefer to push the obligation out into the future then Pittsburgh should attach a third rounder to consummate the trade.
