Top 10 favorites for Super Bowl 56: Chiefs lead the way
7. Super Bowl 56 favorites – Seattle Seahawks
In a case that was a bit similar to the Steelers, Seattle began the year as a prime Super Bowl contender and flamed out in the Wild Card round. A big issue was the seeming disappearing act the MVP-level play of Russell Wilson did in the second half of the season.
The Seahawks made a point to let Russ cook early in the year, throwing early and often to take full advantage of Wilson’s talents. That philosophy vanished in the second as Seattle went more conservative, resulting in the offense disappearing and offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer getting shown the door after a Wild Card loss at home to the Rams.
Maintaining an aggressive posture with Wilson is going to be necessary in the stacked NFC West, but the Seahawks will also need some improvement on the defensive side of the ball as well. Seattle’s defense came out of the gate very slowly, forcing Wilson to win shootouts, but gelled in the second half.
Having a more consistent defense will certainly give the Seahawks a great chance to win a second Super Bowl with Wilson and head coach Pete Carroll. Their issue will be getting out of the NFC West, which looks like the league’s toughest division once again.
